Minimalist coffee table design blending material contrast, functional storage, and form clarity.

MonoBlock is a sculptural coffee table born out of a week-long exploration into asymmetric form, material contrast, and interlocking joinery. Built as a furniture design elective sprint, the goal was to create a bold centerpiece using minimal parts, expressive planes, and architectural tension.
Design Intent
Rather than layering complexity, the table expresses its identity through the intersection of just two elements: a matte-black folded metal base and a circular plywood top. The silhouette changes with angle—what seems monolithic from one side feels balanced and airy from another.
Key Features
Asymmetric profile: Avoids traditional leg symmetry to create visual tension.
Material contrast: Warm wood meets cold black steel for tactile and visual distinction.
Joinery logic: Interlocking planes without fasteners ensure stability and easy assembly.
Spatial behavior: Table casts dynamic shadows and appears different from every seat in the room.
Technical Build
1. Ideation & Sketching
Focused on gesture-based form — a table that feels like a folded surface emerging from the floor.
2. CAD + Technical Drawing
Generated full drawing set including leg bend profile, top cut dimensions, and joint detailing.
3. Mockup & Final Render
Modeled, rendered, and visualized in multiple interiors to test proportion and presence. Evaluated scale (600mm dia) against lounge layouts.
Result
MonoBlock is not just a table—it’s a geometric pause in the living room. Designed to stand alone or support objects, it invites interaction while making a statement in form, material, and restraint.
